An idea that I've been toying with is comming up with some way to
correlate different input variables to how they actually impact
performance. The specific case that brought this on was looking at how
much heap correlation impacts the index scan penalty, though I was also
looking at some things like how much sort_mem affects sort speed with an
on-disk sort. I suspect that the best way to find out about this info is
to do performance testing while changing one variable at a time.
Probably not directly related, but possibly food for thought.
